The strength of the Aliens series is humans trying to escape, fighting a monster. Why care about them? Why not spend those first 3 hours upping the tension and scare-factor instead of telling us about unpleasant people? There is just no adrenaline. It is just not a fun bunch to get to know. None of the characters except maybe Daniels are sympathetic, all seem incredible incompetent and willfully obtuse. It is mostly descriptive: 'This is the hardass one, she was the smart one, and so on. So does it really matter who they are and what their motivations may be? The characterizations themselves are bad. Since this is the Aliens series and none of them are called Ripley, you know they are expandable anyway. They are spend trying to describe the human characters and their relationships. Second, this is already a very short book, but the first 3 hours nothing really happens. It is just a run of the mill technology runs amuck origins story. I say 'ruin', because it is much less scary than whatever you imagine it may be when you first saw the Aliens movie, or heard any of the later books & audiodramas in the series.

With that, it kind of ruins/spoils the threat and mystique of the rest of the series. Because of that, it tries to explain how the xenomorphs came about.

Story: Even though this is the first (second if you count origins) Aliens book, it came out very late in the series/movie series. I will try to explain why without spoilers. Only get it if you want the whole Aliens series
